Do Americans Believe In Guardian Angels?

More than half of all Americans believe they have been helped by a guardian angel in the course of their lives, according to a new poll by the Baylor University Institute for Studies of Religion.

In a poll of 1700 respondents, 55% answered affirmatively to the statement, "I was protected from harm by a guardian angel." The responses defied standard class and denominational assumptions about religious belief; the majority held up regardless of denomination, region or education — though the figure was a little lower (37%) among respondents earning more than $150,000 a year.

The guardian angel encounter figures were "the big shocker" in the report, says Christopher Bader, director of the Baylor survey that covered a range of religious issues, parts of which are being released Thursday in a book titled What Americans Really Believe. In the case of angels, however, the question is a little stronger than just belief. Says Bader, "If you ask whether people believe in guardian angels, a lot of people will say, 'sure.' But this is different. It's experiential. It means that lots of Americans are having these lived supernatural experiences."

Sociologists may need further research to determine how broadly the data should be interpreted. The Baylor study tested other statements that might indicate a similar belief in the supernatural intruding into everyday personal experience — "I heard the voice of God speaking to me"; and "I received a miraculous physical healing." But far fewer people claimed to have had those experiences. This raises the possibility that guardian angels, which famously support an industry of sentimental accessories, are just so darned attractive that they exist in a charmed belief niche of their own.

But other factors may be in play. On one end of the spectrum of American religion are the analytical churches, on both the right and the left theologically and politically, which are primarily concerned with establishing Biblical principles to live by — and are suspicious of any modern-day irruption of the supernatural into religious life. Their miracles all took place in the Bible. At the opposite end of the spectrum are the more experiential churches, like many African-American denominations and those in the Pentecostal movement, that lay heavy emphasis on the workings of the Holy Spirit, where the supernatural, through gifts like healing, prophesying and speaking in tongues, makes regular visits in the pews. In the middle are sacramental faiths like Roman Catholicism, where the supernatural has a regular place on the altar (after all, the Eucharist is said to be the literal body and blood of Christ) but one that occurs only within the restrictions of very specific ritual.

What's interesting about the Baylor findings on guardian angel experiences is that they cross all boundaries. They have scriptural writ (in Psalm 91 and elsewhere). They are clearly experiential. And guardian angels are a prominent part of Catholic belief that happens to float freely outside of a sacrament. The cross-spectrum legitimacy of the notion of angelic interventions may free Americans to engage in the kind of folk faith that is part of almost any religious system but is not always officially acknowledged.

Randall Balmer, chairman of the religion department at New York's Barnard College, says that the Baylor angel figures are one in a periodic series of indications that "Americans live in an enchanted world," and engage in a kind of casual mysticism independent of established religious ritual, doctrine or theology. "There is," he says, a "much broader uncharted range of religious experience among the populace than we expect." Just possibly, Baylor has begun to chart it.

The Natural Connection - Angels and Children - Lorna Byrne

In my quest to find out more about the angels amongst us I stumbled upon Lorna Byrne, an Irish mystic who claims to see Angels all around her. She recently appeared on Irelands No 1 talk show, the Late Late Show. Please read below to find out what Lorna has to say about the connection between children and angels.

Lorna Byrne - As a child I used to talk to Angels all the time. It seemed so natural to me and I always thought other children were doing the same. I felt so sad when I was about six, and started to notice that this wasn’t the case.

In fact all babies and young children can and do see Angels but, about the time a child starts to talk, they begin to be told what’s real and what’s not, they become conditioned and lose the ability to see and experience more.

Babies and very young children are more open than us, they frequently see and hear things that an adult can’t. They may tell you that they have been playing with a deceased grandparent, and use some phrase that he or she always used or they may tell you they saw something that you didn’t. Don’t tell them they couldn’t have, don’t ridicule them. Listen to what they have to say, it could be a message or a warning for you.

Mothers and fathers often come to talk to me about their children, particularly teenagers. Often they are tired or irritated and stressed out by their behaviour. They love their children, but sometimes they don’t find living with them easy.

I tell them to ask the Angels for a special Angel to come and help them with their children, to give them patience and calm them and to help them to see the beauty and love in their children.
My experience of this wisdom in action:
An English woman came to see me. She and her husband and two children had recently moved to Ireland because of his job.

She said she didn’t believe in Angels, but that someone had suggested she come to see me. She explained that she was very worried because of some of the things that her three year old was saying to her. Sometimes he would break off from playing and say things that sounded very grown up, at times he would give her orders, telling her what to do and what not to do and then immediately after he would just continue playing. She couldn’t understand this and it worried her deeply.

As I was talking to her, I could see her Guardian Angel appearing behind her. I told her that it was possibly her son’s Guardian Angel giving him messages for her to make the family’s move easier. I suggested that she should say nothing to him, but to listen to what he said and to keep it in mind.
A few months later she came back to visit me. She told me that life was working out well and that they were very happy in Ireland.  She  told me that she was being driven demented by her son. Each time he and his little sister were in the car, he would insist that she not go to town the short way – by turning down the road on the left - but that instead she should take the long way around.

Again the mother's Guardian Angel appeared behind her and I smiled and told her I was positive that it was his Guardian Angel protecting the family and that she shouldn’t take the left turn until her son said it was okay. She promised me she wouldn’t.

A few days later she was going down town to the shops and was in a hurry. She went to turn left and when she did, her son became hysterical in the back of the car screaming at her. She turned back.
When she was in the shops she heard that there had just been a serious car crash on the road she had wanted to take. She knew in her own heart that her car would have been involved and this is what she and her children were being protected from.

What Are Angels?

The word Angel comes from the Greek word "Angelos" which means "messenger". In Christian, Muslim, Jewish and other theologies an angel can be one who acts as a messenger, attendant or agent of God.

Throughout the bible it is generally seen that the will of God is usually imparted or carried out by angels. Angels are spirits without bodies, who possess superior intelligence, gigantic strength, and surpassing holiness.

Angels are composed of ethereal matter, thus allowing them to take on whichever physical form best suits their immediate needs.

They enjoy an intimate relationship to God as His special adopted children, contemplating, loving, and praising Him in heaven. Some of them are frequently sent as messengers to men from on high. Angels are the essence of love and joy and stem from the Heart of God/Goddess.

Angels are countless in their number, and flock around the Universe in their millions. Angels are dedicated to serve the needs of all free will entities so that you may experience the same level of unconditional love as they do. Each Angel carries out its assigned task without any hint of hesitation as they take great joy and pleasure in offering their Loving Wisdom and Guidance. Everyone has Angels around them constantly, without exception, and they are eager and excited at the opportunity to communicate with you.

Angels was created with one purpose, the purpose to love and to serve all without condition. In doing so, Angels hold a focus of pure love throughout the Universe and are therefore able to set up a resonance for the vibration of pure love wherever it is needed. You on the other hand, are a free will entity. That means that you have chosen to develop your ability to exist with unconditional love by gaining much experience through many lifetimes and many varied forms of existence. The Angels have been created to counter balance any energies or actions that move in the opposite direction to love so that you will eventually remember your true essence.
